The Better Broadband programme has achieved 5 years of successful delivery across Oxfordshire for installing superfast broadband. To date, the programme has achieved:
- 76,055 premises connected to superfast fibre
- 59% of take-up to fibre broadband with internet service providers
- 531 kms of fibre cable laid across the county
- 573 Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) delivered
See the coverage maps below, which show the progression of superfast broadband availability from data collected at the end of 2012 to present day.
The objective of the Better Broadband for Oxfordshire programme is to:'Bring superfast broadband to over 96% of homes and businesses in Oxfordshire by the end of 2018.' The Better Broadband programme had achieved 96% coverage by November 2018 with more than 59% reached by the rollout already opting for an upgrade. At that stage, the programme had enabled more than 76,055 households and businesses to connect to superfast broadband speeds. Now, the Better Broadband programme is looking into approaches for the final 4% to ensure that premises are not left behind.
The Better Broadband team have issued the tender for the Grant Funding Agreement from DEFRA for securing superfast broadband coverage aimed at businesses in rural Oxfordshire. This funding is aimed at improving business productivity and growth and will help to ensure Oxfordshire maintains a balanced economy. The funding is worth £6.3m and the expectation is that this project will connect approximately a further 1275 of the most rural and isolated premises in the county to full fibre broadband service capability. There is also the Better Basic Broadband Scheme as an interim measure for premises that are unable to access a broadband service with a download speed of at least 2Mbps and who will not benefit from the superfast broadband rollout. Finally, there is also the £67m Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme for upgrading broadband to full fibre, which is a government scheme facilitated by the Better Broadband for Oxfordshire programme.
