Bringing superfast broadband to over 96% of homes and businesses in Oxfordshire by the end of 2018

Wireless Broadband Providers Event

27 July 2017

Oxfordshire County Council hosted a wireless providers networking event in Oxford city to great success. Thirteen people representing six wireless broadband providers attended, plus representatives from three district councils (Cherwell, South and Vale).

The objective of the event was to look at the final 4% of premises that will not be covered either commercially nor through the Better Broadband for Oxfordshire programme. Cllr Ian Hudspeth, Leader of the Council opened the event, followed by a short history of our programme presented by Craig Bower, Programme Director. Rather than a one-way communication from presenter to audience, this was a dynamic discussion with the wireless broadband providers and Mr Bower engaging each other in a variety of broadband related topics, from State Aid to the definition of fibre broadband to infrastructure development and funding opportunities.

There was discussion about how wireless broadband providers could access funding available in the district councils to support infrastructure development. After that, attendees discussed future networking opportunities and how to manage challenges. No-one in the room wanted to see premises in Oxfordshire left without access to superfast broadband and there was general agreement that the mode of delivering this broadband (fibre or wireless) should not be the focus. The key was to deliver the speed needed to the premise.

Feedback from attendees was very positive and contact details for all attendees will be shared for future networking opportunities.
